California CCW New/Renewal Training Syllabus (You Must Know Senate Bill 2 (SB2))
California Senate Bill 2 (SB 2), signed into law in September 2023, made significant changes to California’s concealed carry weapon (CCW) laws. The bill restricts where individuals with CCW permits can carry firearms in public, designating 26 types of locations as “sensitive places” where carrying is prohibited. Additionally, SB 2 establishes new requirements for obtaining a CCW permit, including age restrictions (21 years old), background checks, and character references.
“Sensitive Places” Restrictions:
SB 2 prohibits carrying firearms in a wide range of public locations, including:
- Parks, libraries, and hospitals.
- Public transportation, places of worship, and schools.
- Bars, entertainment venues, and amusement parks.
CCW Permit Requirements:
- Age: Applicants must be 21 years old.
- Background Checks: All applicants are required to undergo a thorough background check.
- Character References: Applicants need to provide character references.
Training:
Initial applicants must complete a 16-hour firearms safety course, while renewal applicants are required to complete an 8-hour course.
Reduced Carrying Locations:
The law significantly reduces the places where CCW holders can legally carry firearms.
Stricter Permit Requirements:
SB 2 imposes more stringent requirements for obtaining a CCW permit, potentially limiting access for some individuals.
